Caregiving
Family caregiver EI benefit
Temporary Employment Insurance income replacement when an eligible worker takes leave to care for or support a critically ill or injured family member. Service Canada publishes separate benefits for critically ill or injured adults and for children, each with its own medical certificate rules and week limits.
The medical certificate and week limits depend on whether the person is an adult or a child and on whether the situation is critical illness or injury, not end-of-life care.
Commonly confused with
Compassionate care EI benefits (end-of-life situations with significant risk of death within 26 weeks) and the Canada caregiver tax credit (a non-refundable credit on your tax return, not weekly EI).
The exact definition and rules can differ by program. Check the official rules for the benefit you are applying for.
