How we build MyEligible

MyEligible Standards

Administrative knowledge should increase people's agency.

MyEligible is already a substantial decision-support platform. These standards describe how we approach accuracy, clarity, accessibility, privacy, and accountability, so people can leave with clearer understanding, useful next steps, honest limits, and less risk of an avoidable administrative dead end.

Helping people

Agency, situation-first guidance, actionability, rights, and administrative resolution.

  • MES-01

    Useful agency

You remain the beneficiary of the reasoning, not a data source for an institution.

We explain what matters now, what you can control, and what happens next. One clear primary action comes before secondary detail. When we cannot match a program, we still aim to leave you with a manageable next step rather than a generic link list.

  • MES-04

    Situation first

You should not have to learn government architecture to use MyEligible.

We start from what you are experiencing, ask only questions that change the route, and support overlapping needs where a journey requires it. Uncertainty is not punished; “not sure” paths still aim to be useful.

  • MES-06

    Action and resolution

“Apply here” is not always the end of the problem.

We point to specific programs, forms, contacts, or evidence to prepare when verified routes exist, not broad homepages as the only answer. We distinguish new applications, renewals, interruptions, refusals, and rights-based escalation, with verified handoffs when they exist.

Getting things right

Authoritative sources, honest uncertainty, combined needs, program interactions, and jurisdictional correctness.

  • MES-02

    Authoritative evidence

We check important information against authoritative sources before we present it as fact.

Rules, amounts, deadlines, and official steps should trace to current government or program sources with a genuine last-verified date where we make a consequential claim. We separate what is enacted today, what is announced for the future, and what still needs confirmation.

  • MES-03

    Honest uncertainty

An honest unknown is better than a confident wrong answer.

Missing information must not silently mean eligible or ineligible. We say what is uncertain, who can resolve it, and what you can still do. We do not claim to approve benefits, adjudicate claims, or guarantee outcomes.

  • MES-05

    Interactions and jurisdiction

A benefit is not useful in isolation if another rule or household member changes the outcome.

We keep recipients, caregivers, and household members distinct; use country- and province-specific reasoning; and deduplicate actions so different needs lead to materially different next steps when official routes differ.

Treating people well

Dignity, cognitive clarity, accessibility, and calm design.

  • MES-07

    Dignity and clarity

Plain language should reduce cognitive load, not hide important qualifications.

We write for normal Canadians and New Zealanders, not internal policy jargon. Material caveats stay near the conclusions they affect, using progressive disclosure for optional depth.

  • MES-08

    Accessibility

Essential actions must be operable and legible across devices, themes, and assistive technology.

We target WCAG 2.2 AA and run automated checks plus manual critical-path review. Lived-experience and assistive-technology testing is documented when it happens; we do not claim it occurred everywhere when it has not.

  • MES-09

    Calm, recognizable design

Visual design should help you understand, decide, trust, and act, not compete for attention.

We use a restrained MyEligible visual system: clear hierarchy, paper-on-cream surfaces, sage accents, and one dominant action per view. We avoid fear-based colour, decorative clutter, and misleading “clickable” affordances on informational cards.

Earning trust

Privacy, independence, localization, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • MES-10

    Privacy and independence

We minimize data collection and do not sell access to benefits.

Partners may support infrastructure, never recommendation influence. We avoid putting sensitive situations into URLs or analytics when a safer design exists, and we describe privacy limits honestly in our data-handling practices.

  • MES-11

    Localization and depth

Policy and trust stay local even when architecture is shared.

Canada and New Zealand use separate official sources and journeys. We do not export one country’s programs as another’s, and we describe where coverage is deep versus still growing.

  • MES-12

    Correctability

Standards matter most when something is wrong, stale, or confusing.

We use consequence-based review, deterministic regression checks where practical, and a clear way to report problems. Corrections aim to be traceable; a green automated test is not the same as independent human sign-off on every change.

How we uphold our standards

Publishing principles is not enough. MyEligible combines source discipline, automated checks, risk-based review, and correction workflows, with honest limits on what is fully enforced today.

  1. Verify important information

Consequential rules, amounts, deadlines, and administrative steps are checked against authoritative government and program sources. We distinguish confirmed facts, estimates, items needing confirmation, and future changes not yet in effect. See our Sources page for how official references are listed.

  2. Test our guidance

Automated scripts and deterministic scenario tests catch many regressions, for example wrong province routing, broken translations, incorrect calculator output, or a next action pointing at the wrong official service. These complement, but do not replace, manual visual, keyboard, and accessibility review on critical paths.

  3. Review consequential changes

Changes affecting eligibility, money, health coverage, deadlines, or rights receive greater scrutiny using our governance risk tiers. Independent human secondary review is the normal standard for material Tier 1 changes, with documented emergency exceptions when known-wrong guidance must be corrected quickly.

  4. Correct problems and improve

When guidance is wrong, incomplete, or confusing, we aim to identify the issue, check authoritative evidence, correct or limit misleading output, re-test affected journeys, and add safeguards where practical. Not every historical page has the same verification depth.

When something needs correcting

If you see information that seems wrong, outdated, or hard to use, tell us. We review reports for consequence, correct inaccurate Tier 1 guidance as promptly as practical, and track recurring issues so safeguards can improve.

Report a problem

What our standards do not guarantee

MyEligible is decision support, not government adjudication. In particular:

  • We do not decide official eligibility or approve payments.
  • We do not guarantee that an application succeeds or that a provider accepts a claim.
  • We do not make clinical or legal decisions.
  • We do not replace caseworkers, lawyers, or government decision-makers.
  • We do not claim complete coverage of every program in every jurisdiction.
  • We do not claim every page received the same level of independent testing or review.
  • We are not accredited, certified, or endorsed by government agencies.

Accountability and improvement

These standards align with MyEligible’s internal governance, design, and evidence contracts. They are a public summary, not a claim that every journey already passes every check.

We are also working toward making more of our improvements and important corrections visible over time, so people can see how MyEligible changes and where further work is needed. That public view is not live yet; when it ships, entries will come from traceable records, not invented compliance scores.
