Alberta government drug plans: payor order changes October 1, 2026

Coverage for Seniors and Non-Group Coverage generally act as payor of last resort when private or employer-sponsored drug coverage is available.

What changed

Alberta government-sponsored drug and supplemental plans (including Coverage for Seniors and Non-Group Coverage) are legislated as payor of last resort. When you have private or employer-sponsored coverage, that coverage is normally billed first at the pharmacy; eligible public-plan benefits may cover remaining amounts.

Who may be affected

Albertans enrolled in Coverage for Seniors or Non-Group Coverage who also have private, employer-sponsored, or retiree drug coverage.

Do I need to do anything?

Check if this affects you — Pharmacies must coordinate benefits in the correct payor order. You may need to present all drug plan cards and tell your pharmacist about every plan that covers the prescription.

What to do

Before filling a prescription, confirm all your drug plans with your pharmacist and ask that claims are submitted in the correct order. Use Public Drug Coverage to see how Alberta programs fit your situation.
