What benefits are available to Indigenous people in Canada?

Supports differ by program, distinction, and community. Examples include NIHB for eligible First Nations and Inuit clients, Jordan's Principle for eligible First Nations children, Indigenous-led health and mental wellness services, housing and family programs, education funding, and disability navigation. No single list applies to every Indigenous person.

What benefits are available to First Nations people?

First Nations-specific and First Nations-eligible programs can include NIHB, Jordan's Principle, band or tribal council services, regional health supports, and education or income programs tied to community membership or residency rules. Confirm eligibility with the organization that delivers each program.

What supports are available to Inuit?

Inuit-specific and Inuit-eligible programs can include NIHB for eligible clients, Inuit land claim and regional organizations, northern health and housing supports, and education or employment programs. Eligibility depends on the program, not on a generic Indigenous label.

What supports are available to Métis people?

Métis-specific programs are often delivered through Métis governments and provincial Métis organizations, covering health navigation, education, housing, and community services. Citizenship and registry rules vary; MyEligible does not determine Métis citizenship.

What is NIHB?

Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) is a federal program that helps cover eligible medical, dental, and pharmacy costs for eligible First Nations and Inuit clients when other coverage does not apply. It is not open to all Indigenous people and does not cover every service without prior approval.

What is Jordan's Principle?

Jordan's Principle is a federal principle to help First Nations children access needed products and services without delay while governments resolve who pays. Requests are assessed case by case through the official process; it is not a blanket children's benefit for all Indigenous families.

Where can I find Indigenous services near me?

Use province or territory filters and community connection topics to find Friendship Centres, urban Indigenous organizations, and regional services. Many national programs also list local contacts or locators on their official sites.

Can Indigenous people also receive regular federal or provincial benefits?

Yes. Many general programs, such as the Canada Child Benefit, GST/HST credit, provincial social assistance, or disability tax credits, can apply alongside Indigenous-specific supports when eligibility rules are met. MyEligible labels non-Indigenous-specific programs clearly when they appear as contextual suggestions.
